We wouldn't be over there if a bunch of radical islamists didn't fly a plane into new york. America didn't just decide to go over there and shoot children for fun.

You also can't apply western military ideals to an insurgency using roadside IEDs and guerrilla warfare tactics. The Taliban doesn't really wear any specific uniform, so they will often appear to be civilians. (Many times they will intentionally dress in a way that they can toss their rifles away and walk past a Coalition patrol without raising suspicion.)
