You cannot do this :
x + 1/x = 4
x + x(1/x) = 4(x)

But you can do this :
x + 1/x = 4
x(x + 1/x) = 4(x)

1. x + 1/x = 4

2. x + x(1/x) = x(4)

3. x + 1 = 4x

4. 1 = 4x -x

5. 1= 3x

6. 1/3 = 3x/3

7. 1/3 = x
