If your ISP is Comcast/Xfinity just get the Norton subscription(s) they offer for free due to you being one of their customers.

Otherwise here's a recommendation from everybody whose ever made viruses: MalwareBytes
It has a free & a premium version, you're looking for a free one so go with the free version.

(There's also Kaspersky but its a trial, so take that as you will)

Also Avast & AVG are the shittiest free AVs that work with Win7 onward, I would mention the WinXP & Vista shit ones but they are irrelevant due to them only working on the respected OS they were made for.

    Linux for the win!!

    -For the Microsoft OS-

I suggest Microsoft security essentials over AVG, both are free but MSE has a better detection rate.

Try this, combo MSE and MalwareBytes (aka MBAM). MalwareBytes runs along side your current AV and has tons of features even in the free version. It's helps protect you from hackers, exploits, and of cores Malware. If you AV doesn't get it MBAM will!
There is no right and wrong. There's only fun and boring.

Get AVG if you want something free. Otherwise just buy bitdefender or kapersky.

Eset smart security, it is easy to find key giveaways on the net, doesn't "eat" much and it has never let me down
