Should I play Dark Souls 1 before I play 2?

According to the internet the storylines aren't connected but it also seems like the general consensus says that you SHOULD play the 1st before the 2nd. So I'm asking on here for some first hand experiences, does it really matter?

There's one problem here, I couldn't care less. The devs are already making a SHIT TON from the game and I don't think $40 is going to help then with their future endeavors. The amount of money I've saved by pirating is astounding and I don't care that the devs of the game don't get anything from me, if I think a game is so amazing that it deserves some money being pushed it's way then I'll say to people I know to buy it, simple.

If you're over the age of 12, beating Dark Souls should be no problem, it just takes strategy and brain cells.

TBH I only pirate a game if it's really good and I really can't afford it. But I didn't pirate Dark Souls 2. In fact I bought a copy but didn't play it yet. I'm letting my cousin have the fun by dusting off my PS3 while he's at it.

The PC port of the first is just terribad though, the company did literally a direct port so all the controls are retarded.
