You look at signatures that are decent to get better, not mediocre half-assed tags.

If you're going to give critique, at least give it correctly. Tell them how to improve instead of showing them a bunch of your own work, acting as if looking at the shit you put out is going to help them in anyway become a better artist.

OT: Pick out a high quality render of something you like, get good at placing it on your tag size of choice. (ex. 500x250) Once you get it in a position you think is good enough, look up some styles/techniques for making tags. Whether it be the normal smudge style that a lot of people like nowadays, or something more abstract involving vectors. When you find a style you like, start out with that. Just mess around with the render using the technique you've chosen.

Keep practicing this same style until you get the basics of it down, and you feel comfortable with it. Then go into more advanced things, like lighting, blending, depth etc. Practice adding those things on top of the style that you've mastered. One thing at a time, slowly. Perfect each one of them at your own pace, and for adding effects like lighting or depth, there are TONS of ways to do so. So find a way that works for you.

And overall, just experiment. Test things out, and find out new things you can do with different tools in whatever program you're using. You'll find out all kinds of little tips and tricks that can make an end product better, and they will come in handy.
