I attempted making something (gasp)

First and foremost, I will fully admit that I have never been decent at graphic design. However, I did decide to try and make an avatar. The H's are the initials to my 'online name.'
I know it's pretty basic, but I wanted to focus on the typography more than anything, was going for Visual Studio 2013/Metro while having "aggressive" edges for that 2edgy4me.

Anyways, pointers and advice would be appreciated.

Well it's better than anything I could do. I am terrible at logos.

It's nice. I like the simplicity of it. Maybe a different color than white though.

I had VS open while reading this... Thought the exact same thing. I don't like metro looks normally but you got the 'edgy-ness' down pretty nicely. Props to you!

In my opinion, the image is too empty on the edges.

It would be perfect if those two Hs were part of some text, thus having the logo forming a rectangle, this way however the logo is shaped like a square but feels like it shouldn't.
Basically, you're trying to fit two small squares into one big square, the result will be alot of empty space.

You might consider a different position for the letters or a different design, an hexagon concept would work well with the edgy Hs.

Another option would be to have the letters have different propeties rather than being the same. Take for example the VS logo and view it as two triangles, one is visibly bigger than the other, so the image itself looks interesting.

Put an outer glow "center" not edge, make the opacity 15% put the noise to 100% go to bevel and emboss to the valley thingy and choose the second on the second row rotate the angle of the shading until you get a look you like make sure you put the size to fit whatever you are desiring,

Try a deeper gradient, I could harldy see the contrast in the second one. Other than that its a very nice, simplistic design
