1.2 billion usernames and passwords hacked by Russian gang

A Russian group has hacked 1.2 billion usernames and passwords belonging to more than 500 million email addresses, according to Hold Security - a US firm specialising in discovering breaches.
Hold Security said the botnets helped the hacking group - which it dubbed CyberVor - identify more than 400,000 websites that were vulnerable to cyber attacks.

"The Wall Street Journal later revealed that Hold Security intended to offer website owners the ability to check whether they had been affected, but only if they paid a fee.
The firm has since posted a message on its site saying it will charge $120 (£71) a month for a "breach notification service".
One computer security expert said he was surprised by this approach. "This situation is quite unusual in that the company has decided to charge for this information," Dr Steven Murdoch from University College London's computer science department told the BBC."

Anyone else find this statement in particular fishy as fuck on the part of Hold Security?

    Let me lay it out:

    > Said business provides some of the hijacked data, which proves nothing considering they're a damn security firm.

    > Said business hasn't been stated to be working to fix the issue at all.

    > Said business wants to charge people to find out if they're affected, not to fix their issue, but to bloody just find out if they're 'affected'.

    > Said business wants to charge even more money to businesses for a 'Breach Notification Service' (like that would do any good at all).

Sounds a lot like a damn Racket.
For those not up with crime definitions:

"A racket is a service that is fraudulently offered to solve a problem, such as for a problem that does not actually exist, will not be affected, or would not otherwise exist. Conducting a racket is racketeering. Particularly, the potential problem may be caused by the same party that offers to solve it, although that fact may be concealed, with the specific intent to engender continual patronage for this party."

'Oh no guys, there's a data breach that the entire world completely missed, but we somehow know about, please give us money to find out if it affects you.'

It may very well be legitimate, but I'm not buying it all right now.

Exactly, like what the fuck. Hold Security is probably in association with this Russian gang.

INB4 Summerphags say they can't log into their porn accounts.
