I have a r9 280x from sapphire and I am very pleased with the performance. Also the drivers aplication (raptr) is very friendly, optimizes your games, has recording with no performance loss and twitch streaming. From a specs point of view, the r9 280x is better than the gtx 770 in games. If you also do professional work such as 3d rendering and stuff, get nvidia. If it is for gaming, get amd.

amd is cheaper because it does not have cuda cores, which are used for professional work( rendering videos, etc) and the amd cards are mainly used for either gaming or mining bitcoins. The r9 280x can play any game on the ultra settings atm with 60 fps stable on 1080p, is quite quiet and has a great cooling ( best if you get the vapor x model or the toxic one). AMD had driver problems 3 years ago but they have improved alot since then and are on par with the nvidia ones.

r9 280x is a little bit better than the 770 and the r9 290 is a bit better version of the 780 but i heard that this card consumes alot of energy and isn't as cool as the 280x for an improvement of around 10 fps max.
I really recommend getting the r9 280x. It's the sweetspot of price/performance and it only costs around 300$ i think.
Also, make sure that your cpu won't bottleneck your gpu. You will need at least a fx 8320/ at least an i5.
