standardize x to z = (x - μ) / σ
P(x < 1) = P( z < (1-3.1) / 1.2)
= P(z < -1.75) = 0.0401 ( 4 percent)
(From Normal probability table)


2)From the normal probability table, P( z < 1.645) = 0.95
z = (x - μ) / σ
1.645 = (x-45) / 3
x = (3)(1.645) + 45
x = 49.935
You must leave 49.94 minutes before 9:00 AM (approximately 8:10 AM)
