Admitting defeat? In a way, yes, and in a way, no.


I've seen this done before as a ploy for attention.

Saying nevermind, you wouldn't be interested, does the opposite of what is said, it interests you.

Which then, in-turn, triggers curiosity and you ask what happened, so then, his original plan, without blatantly saying it, still works.

By this I mean: He still tells you his story, but it is asked for, because he wants to feel the slight sense that you care the least bit.

Of course when most see this taking place they don't bother to ask anyway, which, then it is admitting defeat.
