Donald Harvey killed John Powell, a 44 y/o victim of a motorcycle accident in 1987, because he felt bad for his family and friends. At first the police didn't really dug into it, because who would kill someone like that. Detectives turned their attention after a while to the last person to see Powell alive, hospital orderly Donald Harvey, 35. Police brought him in for questioning. It did not take long for him to break.
“I did it,” Harvey admitted. He calmly told of how he poured half a vial of cyanide into Powell’s feeding tube and flushed the rest of the poison down the toilet.
When asked why, Harvey said, “I felt sorry for him, and for his family.”
Then Minarcin started digging, talking to about 50 Drake nurses, patients and staffers. He found evidence of a string of suspicious deaths.
WCPO ran a half-hour special that raised the possibility that as many as 70 or more patients had died from Harvey’s ministrations.
Born April 15, 1952, Harvey’s young life was filled with all kinds of people, events and pathologies that are a formula for growing up a serial killer.
Killings in other hospitals earned him another 11 life sentences. The Angel of Death will be in his 90s before his first possible parole in 2043.
"Mercy killing", how sad. He killed 70+ people just because "he felt bad for their family and friends"
