It's done them so that they don't get destroyed more likely.

When literally every nation on all sides + further out is hellbent on your destruction, it's not surprising that they commit a few brutal acts to remain afloat.

Considering you brought up the Nazi's, Israel's continued war/skirmishes against the countries around it is in consistent retaliation against the same occurrence. Does it make it right? No. Is it necessary for them to do so? Yes. And that is the problem, many of Israel's enemies have a deep-seated appreciation for the Nazi regime. The continued wish for violence against them is just as brutal as Israel's own attacks against them. By utilizing preemptive strikes and continuing a bloody rule, Israel is keeping it's enemies at arms length. If it didn't it would be destroyed. Last time we saw a country be too complacent, Britain allowed Hitler to take Austria. The Israeli's took their past lessons, and are pushing them a bit too far.
