That's because they're not doing it the right way.
Crunches are supposed to be effected through your abs, meaning you force your abs to bring you up and down, not your arms or back.
Even if, after a while, even 100 crunches in a row won't effect your body anymore, it could go to that pace in less than a week, so crunches aren't too effective, just for the beginning.
Trust me though, 100 crunches done right are 100 crunches in pure pain.
You'll also get your neck ready for whats coming. Ab exercises tend to put alot of strain on your neck.

Misunderstanding of the human body and how it develops it's muscles.
Realistically, you're looking at a good 4-6 months of Extreme Workouts to get a solid 6 pack and anywhere from 8-12 months to get some decent results.
Just go at it and don't give up and you'll be gucci.
Unless you already have little to no fat, won't happen in 3 months.

If you don't have fat covering your abs and there's nothing there then you don't have muscle there. Doing crunches and pushups with work your core and help you get them.

Swimming, running, various push-up exercises can all train your core and your abs. Swimming pretty much uses all muscles in the body, so that's overall a good workout for the entire body. If you're got little fat and mainly muscle (Not alot) you should be able to tone it faster than 3 months. Although, that depends on how toned of a fuckin' 6 pack you want.
