Real world performance hardly ever uses past 3.5 so as it is. It's not as common as people make it out to be. Not running at 4k either, running at 2560x1080.
    Computer Specifications:
    Case: NZXT H500i
    PSU: EVGA SuperNova 750W
    Mobo: Gigabyte Z390 Aorus Ultra
    CPU: Intel Core i7-9700K
    CPU Cooling: Kraken x62
    RAM: Gigabyte Aorus 16GB(8x2)3200Mhz
    GPU: Asus 1080 Strix

I would really recommend an MSI Lightning 290x. I agree with your point of VRAM of 3.5 not being a major issue, but the MSI Lightning rendition of the 290x just kicks ass and is hands down the best iteration of the 290x that you can get. I would get the Lighting version of the 290x any day of the week over a 970. With regards to potentially upgrading to the 980; I think that unless you're gonna be playing really, really demanding games that you won't notice the negligible performance difference. A couple things you might wanna look for in the next couple of months is the 300 series release and the 980ti release. Those could prove to be compelling options.

I'm not sure, all I know is that the release should be coming out pretty soon. Nothing has been announced or made official about the release date of it, though we do know that it is coming out pretty soon

That depends 970 is a middle of the line graphics card, 980 is a high end graphics card, you most likely wont need 980

Dunno. I'm not running at a standard 16:9. At the moment I am at 21:9(2560x1080), and I'm contemplating going to the 3440x1440 with the 34 lg monitor. Nothing is for sure though.

Price difference isn't worth the performance increase imo. I'd go with the gtx 970, or wait for AMD's 300x series.

It should. At least at any resolution above 1080p.
