    Immortality

Dunno... It's a strange thing to think about. If Immortality is truly reachable in this lifetime, I see it going down and completely destroy this planet for good. I mean, I myself fancy the idea of it. However, with the amount of people we currently have, a form of population control will be needed to put into place. Without that control, you might as well say fuck it, and go die right then and there.

Something will happen within our life-time. But when whatever it is does happen, how quickly does this world collapse?

Yeah it definetly would. Death is an important part of life. Basically, life can't continue to exist without death. Anyways, if humans really do find the secret to immortality, it would probably be kept a secret. I mean who's to say we haven't found the secret already? I'm sure if immortality is achieved, only a select few will enjoy it.
Just look at the life cycle: An organism lives its entire life feeding on organisms lower in the food chain and then it dies. When it dies, decomposers feed on its body and return nutrients into the earth. These nutrients give life to plants. And the cycle continues.

If somehow immortality was created, the earth would survive at best 5 years as it would screw the cycle of life.

Pretty sure we're talking about slowing aging/stopping it.
Since never being able to die is nearly impossible.

I think long life with the possibility of death if you are killed in X way is the best form of "immortality".

Dunno. Hawking believes that eventually we will be able to "transfer" our "Conscious", and have a copy of said person/be able to put it in something else. Dunno.

I mean if we were to have a form of immortality that didn't allow us to reproduce we would still need to unlock space travel quickly or we'd destroy the planet within 10 years.
    How now brown cow.

While death is unappealing and frightening, I wouldn't want to live on Earth forever and be a walking, rotting corpse. Or an old husk hooked to IV's in a wheelchair for the rest of my life. Either way fucking sucks :/
