It didn't explode. It landed on a ship, then they can re-use it. The whole point is to re-use the rockets instead of discarding the $200+ million rockets into the ocean and cut the cost of sending things to space dramatically less.

I don't see anything resembling an explosion. I think either it's turning the surrounding water into steam or they're spraying it with coolant because the rocket is extremely hot.

I definitely see the water turning into steam but near the end there's a pretty big flame on the right side and there were a few pieces of debris.

I actually follow the SpaceX project but I don't recall any successful attempts so far. They've been close but they haven't done it yet.

Oh wow. I don't know how I missed the bright orange explosion watching it three times... I thought you were talking about the grey steam stuff. Yeah I was reading their blog and it said something about a valve or something getting stuck. Will be interesting to see if it works on Sunday.
