I am trying to work my way to a six pack, while standing up, nothing is visible yet, but while laying in bed, most of the stomach is flat apart from the area where the abs should be, they are very much visible ( although the lines that separate them aren't ) does that spell progress or not?

Sounds like you got fat on your stomach hiding your abs. Burn it and you'll probably reveal something.

a lot of cardio man, you shouldn't need weights. My friends done this challenge where you did a few excersizes in the morning and at night and over a month or so they had not bad abs.

Its because when you lie down your skin naturally gets pulled back cuz gravity which in turn reveals your abs.
When you stand up, your skin/fat covers your abs like a curtain.
Everyone has abs, it just depends on the amount of fat you have. What you have is not a lot of fat and average abs, but youre not quite at the "six pack abs" stage

When you can see peoples' abs it's mostly because they have low body fat in that area. Yeah, someone who never works out but has low body fat won't have anything there either but what really makes the difference in being able to see someones' abs or not is the body fat. Like Batman said, everyone has abs you just gotta know how to bring them out.
Everytime someone posts something healthy related I always wonder what draws them to come to a site about gaming (which stereotypically means the site is full of non-athletic nerds who play games all day) and start asking about abs. Google is your friend buddy.

It's progress, but that just means that your "fat" is going "into" your stomach.
Here is my view:
You've got abs, just not very developed ones.
Hard developed abs are visible even through decent fat levels.
If you lose weight now, rather than developing your abs and lowering your fat level, you will have skinny abs, which in my opinion, aren't worth it.
What you need to do is hard abs exercises+clean dieting.
Now, I'm not talking about 'a' diet people usually see when the word diet is said.
I'm talking about sustaining a decent calorie gain without eating wrong fats.
So lets say you eat 2500 calories a day, with white bread and cookies and what else included.
Now you would have to eat 2500 calories a day, avoiding white bread and cooking and all the bad fats and sugars.
That way you won't get skinnier but your body will show alot more definition, especially your abs.
Focus on abs exercises aswell.
Keep in mind though, training your back also provides for yours abs. You don't want tight abs and a loose back, do alot of arch-ups, will help you.
If you want, I can share my personal training schedual with you.
Just keep in mind that you have to finish all the exercises within 15 minutes, and that they are pure calisthenics, so no weights included.
