Privately owned firms will take over the shuttle business so that NASA can finally get to the important stuff like idk... exploring space >_>...

We haven't done anything since Apollo and its because NASA's been playing bus driver for ISS and other things of like 30-40 years. This is a good thing. Means NASA can finally focus, on something more on their level and leave the crappy jobs to private companies.

"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children. The cost of one modern heavy bomber is this: a modern brick school in more than 30 cities. It is two electric power plants, each serving a town of 60,000 population. It is two fine, fully equipped hospitals. It is some fifty miles of concrete pavement. We pay for a single fighter plane with a half million bushels of wheat. We pay for a single destroyer with new homes that could have housed more than 8,000 people. This is, I repeat, the best way of life to be found on the road the world has been taking. This is not a way of life at all, in any true sense. Under the cloud of threatening war, it is humanity hanging from a cross of iron."
    - Dwight D. Eisenhower

Canceling all space travel until we have something different = stupid idea, maybe when we have an alternative. We need to be in space, not give other countries more room to expand in space...

I live in Florida. There's going to be dramatic drop in employment rate around where I live. Basically we're fucked.

You blame NASA, I blame politicians. Every single person in NASA wants to make space travel a reality, guess who's pulling the whole space base operation.

    Obama.

Space is something me and Obama are totally opposite on. The moon landings inspired people, not teachers.

I would really like to see more globalization in space exploration, the ISS is a good step but we really shouldn't require organizations like NASA, CNSA or the RKA. The moment we leave the earth, we're no longer making an advancement for our nation, we're making an advancement for the human race. Space travel isn't a Russian achievement, it's a human achievement. We need to spend a little less time bickering over ideology, nationalistic fervor may have kicked off the space program but that by no means insinuates that it needs to continue that way.

What do you guys think about this:
If we really are the only intelligent life in the universe at this current time (perhaps life is still forming and evolving on different planets), do we have an obligation to seed life on other planets? A sort of human-directed panspermia. I think we should... And when we develop the technology to terra-form planets, there'll be stopping life, other than the eventual heat death of the universe.
