    can hardwares be infected/contain viruses?

im wondering if hardwares such as routers, modems, speakers, mouse, keyboards, monitors, etc contain viruses/be infected?

like if they are and i reformat my computer will the new formatted computer be infected?

    I haven't seen a router / modem carry viruses
but a keyboard and mouse can.
Those keyboards and mice with instant-install drivers lmfai

true however if the computer is left on a virus could sit in the ram

if hes running windows 7 and its going into hybrid mode the virus would remain in the ram

until the computer is restarted via the shutdown option and the power was removed

from the system and the system power button was pressed with no power connected

as in some systems the residual current left in the system could maintain a virus.

Also the bios and the hardrive boot sector can get infected by a virus.

Simply turning off the power would not cure either of these.
