    Potential Gaming rig

Was thinking of building a gaming rig for myself, nothing too top end but mostly things that provide good performance at a low price. Only really looking to play games of today (e.g black ops, various MP games) but not expecting to have super high graphics quality.

Current specs I'm looking at are:

    Intel Core i5 2500k 3.3Ghz Quad Core
    Seasonic M12II 620W PSU
    Samsung SpinPoint F3 1TB
    Gigabyte Geforce 9800GT 512MB (Possibly)
    Kingston HyperX DDR3 4GB RAM

I know I need some more things but just wondering, good or not? I've looked up some prices and just that is about $870 NZD (~$700 USD). Again, I'm not wanting anything too expensive, just something that will run today's games.

    Advice pls.

go for a better graphics card.

1TB is abit too much; at least for me, so maybe i'll cut back on the harddisk and spent it on the core or the graphics card.
I see what you did there.

I'm not to keen on this stuff but here's a link to a write up that a mate of mine did for another mate.

    Porkchop Sammiches!!!!

if you cant read that then here is what it says

this is what i have sofar:

    what do y'all think?

    Hi Prof!

this sounds like a sweet build. ok first up- do you like the colour red?

and how do you feel about shiny red lights and a flashy case?

To build "not just any computer" ; to build "something pretty awesome" is pretty fun to do on a budget such as yours.

Most modern pc focus primarily around the colour black, with board manufacturers using a lot of blue this round. There are some military cammo coloured ones coming through, also ive seen some nice black and silver/gold trim ones used to effect.

But to go the extra mile, to seek the road less travelled; - how about this:- ?

    [Image: th_phantomredsidepanel.jpg] [Image: th_phantomrednzxtinside.jpg] [Image: th_phantomredinsideempty.jpg] [Image: th_noobcasenzxtphantom.jpg]

    mainboard powersupply memory heatsink soundcard
    [Image: th_noobmoboasrp67fat.jpg] [Image: th_noobpsuoczfat.jpg] [Image: th_noobramcoesdomgt8g.jpg] [Image: th_noobhsfcorsh70.jpg] [Image: th_noobsndcrttit.jpg]

    All that sofar tallies to about $1504. You'd still need to choose a videocard or 2;
    1.) ASUS560 1G $299 2.)ASUS6950 2G $339 3.)MSI560 $298 4.) Gigabyte570 $445
    [Image: th_noobvgaasu560.jpg] [Image: th_noobvgaasu69502g.jpg] [Image: th_noobvgamsi560.jpg] [Image: th_noobvgagig5703fan.jpg]

and then there's whatever left over for a new 24" LCD or 2, a new mouse, keyboard, some fans, speakers, and a new copy of windows7Professional64 for (in itself $148) Oh and some hard disks.

if u can let me know in regards to what accessories you may be interested in, i can tailor a bit more.

How do you like the sound of 'dem shiny red apples?!

    Survivzor.

P.S. the processor of course is a new intel 2600k that would be mildly overclocked to at least the 4Ghz point very comfortably with the self contained liquid cooling unit. heck from what ive heard 5Ghz isnt out of the question on high-end aircooling.
Leave out the [Img] things and read the text - hope that helped you bro.

    Everything is fine except

    Gigabyte Geforce 9800GT 512MB
Get a GTX 460 or a 550 Ti. Just get a GTS 450 if you don't want to spend a lot.

save yourself money and stay with low cpu, any game can be run using a p4 @ 3.0ghz, the only things games need are RAM & GPU.

    spend wisely my friend.

for GPU: i still have a 9800GTX+ 1gb that can run all games on high that have been released till todays date, not on this pc tho.

That's quite too far with the GTX.
    480 is enough.

    CPU: AMD AM3 Phenom II X4 955BE $147
    Mobo: Asus M4A87TD-USB3 $99
    RAM: Kingston 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3-1333 $44
    HDD: Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB $57
    GPU: 2GB AMD Radeon HD6950 $282
    Case: Antec 300 $55
    PSU: Seasonic M12II 520W $113
    ODD: LiteOn DVD burner $40
CPU HSF: Coolermaster Universal Hyper 212+ $33

    Total: $870AUD ($1,082.22NZD)

That's a pretty good build for a bit more than your budget. Obviously if you go Intel you gain performance at an extra cost (Intel is better value for me).

If you're restricted to $900NZD, then replace the parts I mentioned with these and dont get the CPU HSF.

    Mobo: Asus M4A78LT-M-LE $58
    GPU: 1GB AMD Radeon HD6850 $182
    Case&PSU: Thermaltake V4 Black Edition w/ 450W TT Litepower PSU $79

Total comes down to $607AUD ($814.11NZD). Then you a bit of extra money you can spend on better cooling, better case, or on a new set of peripherals.
