    What would you do?

    Hi guys,

I am facing a standstill/ possible turning point in my career path and would like to know what you guys would do in my situation.

    So...

I am 19 years old (20 in October) and I am, at the moment, a teacher for a nice, professional but small training provider. Basically I go out and teach people in all sorts of categories from IT all the way to Team Leading and Management. I love what I do at the moment and I was very lucky the way I came into the teaching sector and my employers have invested a hell of a lot of time and money in developing my abilities and I don't want to throw it back in their faces. When I am teaching I get to meet a very diverse group of people, each of which have their own abilities and skills. I get on with all of the people I teach and I enjoy meeting new people every day.

    But...

Since I was very young (9 or 10) I have always wanted to join the British Armed Forces. When I left school I didn't take up the opportunity I was given. A lot of my friends are now in the army and some of them are on operational tours in Afghanistan or training in Cyprus. I wake up every morning and think "That could have been me." Now I am seriously contemplating joining the Yorkshire Regiment to do my basic training and then to start training as a marksman for my regiment. Like I mentioned above, I don't want my employer to think I am ungrateful but I don't know what to do.

This is mainly aimed at the older generation on MPGH and I want to ask, what would you do in my situation?

Most of you will just read this and not reply but thanks in advance to those who take the time to reply.

Well yes, I have thought about that but there is more to think about than just the risk of getting shot. There are risks in every job you do in life, I just don't know.

If you enjoy what you're doing (and it sounds like a good job), why would you join the army? And what if you're not able to join the army after all ...

Yes it is a good job and I do enjoy it but the fact all my friends are in the army and I am missing out eats at me every day. I know I am able to join the army because I have met all the requirements and I am more than fit enough to pass all of my medical examinations.

Well you shouldn't care about the company you're working for now, they have enough money to train another man. Would you earn more/less in the army, and you think you can keep it up for years, instead of having a 'fun time'?

The pay is not the same, it is a bit more in the army but money isn't my major concern cause whilst I'm training I won't spend a lot anyway. I don't intendt to do what I am doing forever but I just don't know haha, for me personally it's a really hard decision.

Joining the army is very brave. You're a good man for even considering that.
Do you have a special lady though? and are you close to your family? because joining the army means youd be away from them for months, even years.

Well then i guess you just have to narrow it down to what you think will make you happier, what will have more pay (although you already mentioned it was the army career) and whats more long term...

I think that if I serve my first tour in the army I will stay there for a long time because at the moment it is amazingly fascinating to me and as I have said, I have always wanted to do it. For the pay aspect, yes it is better by a little bit like I said before. I think I would be happier in the army because I could bond with people easily and form a new "family".
