cant that count as the way it reproduces?

They don't reproduce in the classical sense. They fuck with the cell's instructions, insert their DNA/RNA into the host cell, kick the cell's ribosomes into overdrive so that the cell will keep producing copies. Then, depending on the virus, the new viroids will bud off the cell, or the cell will burst in some violent fashion releasing more macrophages upon the world.

Viruses are beautiful, simple, elegant, and deadly machinery. They are not alive for the same reason that a computer virus is not alive. It does not deviate from it's programming unless mutation arises. It's sole purpose is to propagate. It does not react to any stimuli. I poke you with a hot iron, you'll jump back, I attack a virus, it'll just die. The key is knowing how to attack it in the right fashion, and leaving no survivors, to prevent mutation.

Scientifically, no they are not alive. I like to think they are in the "gray" area. They can reproduce but they don't display characteristics that would make them "alive" in scientific terms, like Azathoth said.

Did you pass biology in 6th or 7th grade? Because that is the stupidest shit I've heard in about 3 days.

im taking it now in 9th grade

btw, I thought that viruses were sub-cellular life forms? (read that somewhere...)

How are they sub-cellular life forms if they're technically not alive.

FML, the I know zero biology. I literally stopped after Gr10 and took Gr11 and G12 phys\chem. Boh1, biology doesn't help me understand physics soh fuckit.

There are two types of tragedies in life. One is not getting what you want, the other is getting it.

If you wake up at a different time in a different place, could you wake up as a different person?

    What Mr. Wikipedia thinks.

They have been described as "organisms at the edge of life",[56] since they resemble organisms in that they possess genes and evolve by natural selection,[57] and reproduce by creating multiple copies of themselves through self-assembly. Although they have genes, they do not have a cellular structure, which is often seen as the basic unit of life. Viruses do not have their own metabolism, and require a host cell to make new products. They therefore cannot naturally reproduce outside a host cell[58] – although bacterial species such as rickettsia and chlamydia are considered living organisms despite the same limitation.[59][60] Accepted forms of life use cell division to reproduce, whereas viruses spontaneously assemble within cells. They differ from autonomous growth of crystals as they inherit genetic mutations while being subject to natural selection. Virus self-assembly within host cells has implications for the study of the origin of life, as it lends further credence to the hypothesis that life could have started as self-assembling organic molecules.[1]

We don't see biology here, most related thing to biology its Bio-chem and it envolves nothing about viruses.

True this. The only thing we know about so-called viruses, is that they live in your computer, infect it, and a anti-virus program can stop them.
