Just back from watching Pacific Rim and figured I'd write a review while it's still fresh in my mind.
Not going to give any spoilers away so don't worry about that.
First I'll start with the pros:
As always Guillermo del Toro delivers some stunning cinematic direction.
The effects and fight scenes were top notch, and the film had plenty of both.
What I enjoyed about this flick the most is that when I go out to see an action flick, I want just that. Lots of action.
Even from the beginning of this film the tone is set with an opening scene of monstrous battle.
I pretty much knew from there that it wasn't going to let up much.
If you're a fan of Sci-fi, stunning effects, and epic Mech vs. Godzilla sized aliens you'll love this movie just for that.
Now the cons:
Unfortunately the individual character story lines were extremely cliche'd.
I felt like I've seen every one of these characters in different movies dozens of times.
Now I understand this is a sci-fi action movie, but it wouldn't kill someone to maybe bring some originality to character development.
I think most people that are into watching movies will understand exactly what I'm conveying once they see this.
There were a few areas in the plot that felt predictable as well.
That being said, it doesn't exactly break the movie viewing experience (especially in the theater) it's just a minor disappointment for me,
considering this is the same guy that brought masterpieces like Pan's Labyrinth and The Orphanage to life.
Overall this was a fun movie packed with shit loads of great action and effects.
I recommend going out to see it in the theaters.
