I just implemented some core optimizations, the engine now handles map sizes > 500x500 perfectly fine. Obviously though dynamic tiles and entities are still going to take a toll on performance even in they aren't visible since their logic must continuously be updated.
500x500 is absurd though, so if it works up to that, it should be good for all purposes.
