Just got an old S3, what can I do with it?

My uncle recently upgraded to the S5 and decided that he would give me his old phone which is an S3. It's network locked to O2 and I plan on rooting it so I can unlock it and do other shit but I've never done and kind of funky things with android before and I don't want to mess anything up. The S3 is running 4.3 Jelly Bean and it's model number is GT-9300. I know there are a few of you who can help so give me some guidance on how I can get up and running.

Also, I've Google some stuff and I have a rough idea of what I'm doing but I just want some good tips on how to not mess anything up.

The great thing about newer Android phones is that they can be used a mobile hotspots, and if you root them, and use a cracked Tether app, you can do it for free. I have an old Droid that I bring on trips with me, and I always have speedy internet for my laptop no matter where I am.

As for rooting, generally stay away from 'Auto-rooting' programs, because most of them are bullshit. There are quite a few great programs out there that'll do most of the heavy lifting, but only a couple that'll do it all, legitimately at least. SuperOneClick is a great program for beginners, and works just as well as any other method. You can head over to the XDA for more info.
I am the seer in the dark,
    the vagabond of yore,
    valediction.
I am the sum of all your parts,
    and proprietor of all.
    A miasma,
    the conclusion,
    blackmonger of Inlé,
    valediction.
    Synapses fray,
    my form now vivid,
as torpor sets and blood grows tepid.
With every ounce of flesh now offered,
I hold your corpse within my coffers.
    Knitted cells now split asunder,
    stand alongside me brother.
Take your place amongst my Owsla,
we march at dawn now and forever.

If you like missing up with things, installing games, too much apps. I recommend you root the device and install any good custom rom.

also, many games can be hacked if the device is rooted.

    Step 1: Open the window.
Step 2: Throw it out of the window.
Step 3: Realise that you just threw your phone.

Can I ask what made you think that this post would be funny in the slightest?

First, I dont know if you have any important info or apps in your phone now.
The thing is; If you google S3 Custom Roms, when you install them the phone gets rooted in process, so no need to root it before, EXCEPT if you want to back up info. If you can install or make backup and copy back to the S3 after install ROMS then forget about rooting before the rom.

Now, Supposing you dont have anything important/ anything that can be reinstalled/copied manually after rom installation:
    1. Go to a website with Samsung S3 roms (google it, the top 10 for me work fine) and browse roms
    2. Download the rom you like the most
    3. Install ClockWork Mod (an app you will use to install rom; you will reboot with this app)
    4. Copy rom to your S3 memory or SD Card
    5. Reboot in safemode or something (can be done from the app I mentioned b4, you open and see in settings)
    6. Clean cache, Dalvik Cache, battery stats, and install the ROM.
    7. Device will reboot and it will load rom
    8. (Optional) Copy all the junk you need (or install it) and you're good to go.

NOTE: On step 6, before you install, you might want to go to the page you downloaded the ROM and look for any special requirements the ROM needs to be installed properly, because it's not the same for all roms.

Good luck and hope you dont mess up.
Contact if you have any doubts.

So you don't have to pay for anything? Which app is that? I want it...

UPDATE: Rooted the phone and all that shit, everything is up to date and I've messed around with a few ROMS and bricked my phone. I've now un-bricked it for an hour or so and everything is back to the way it was and it is now rooted again, I need some good ROMS that aren't Cryanogenmod.
