    Wireless USB Adaptors

My internet speed it suppose to be like 50 Mbps but for some reason it's just EXTREMELY slow. Of course I didn't expect it to be actually 50 MBps since it's shared between like 8 devices. The thing is, my PC seems to get the weakest connection among all devices (for example, my PC would get a speed of 1000 kbps while my ipod sitting next to it gets 68000 kbps and my cousin's PC upstairs gets 130000 kbps). I checked what kind of wireless usb adaptor is (Netgear usb wireless adapter wg111v2) and it can apparently withstand like 54 Mbps (unless I'm reading it wrong), so I would assume my speed should at least be decent. Would getting a better wireless adaptor give me a better connection or would it just be the same results? And how else can I make my connection better? (There's no QoS on my modem/router)

Well, you could always use a wired connection to give you a constant flow of data that rarely deviates from it's maximum output or you could try re-installing the drivers for you wireless adapter. I used to have the exact same adapter before I started using wired so I know what it's like, if you get the oppurtinity to use a wired connection then don't hesitate to jump on it, other than that, I've got nothin'.

Can't use a wired connection, the modem/router is in another room. And I gotta figure out how to reinstall drivers.

That wireless adapter is VERY old, I assume your modem supports 801 B/G/N, while your adapter only supports 801.11 B/G. 54mb is a theoretical maximum and is only achievable on optimal conditions. I would suggest that you purchase a new wireless adapter if you want optimal speeds..

Also please provide more details on the modem and the other devices which achieves higher speeds please.

The internet speed isn't the only factor.
You have to take into account that there's HDD write speeds as well.
So unless whatever media you're writing or reading from can hit that speed, you're not going to reach the top.
I have a semi-dying HDD. I have a 100mbit line, download 10mb/s roughly on a healthy one, downloading to my dying one gives me peaks at 5mb/s and then drops down to a few bytes.

You need to register but you can download them directly from the NetGear website, it may take a while but it's better than nothing.

I have a SBG6580 Wireless Cable Modem Gateway. Devices that seem to have faster speeds are like HP Computers and Apple devices.

    Your Hard Drive.
I am the seer in the dark,

I am the sum of all your parts,
    and proprietor of all.
    A miasma,
    the conclusion,
    blackmonger of Inlé,
    valediction.
    Synapses fray,
    my form now vivid,
as torpor sets and blood grows tepid.
With every ounce of flesh now offered,
I hold your corpse within my coffers.
    Knitted cells now split asunder,
    stand alongside me brother.
Take your place amongst my Owsla,
we march at dawn now and forever.

Buy a 100 foot long Cat5 cable. I bought one for 3$ and it's been working flawlessly for a year.

    Okay that makes sense.

Your wireless adapter doesn't support 'fast wireless' as it is still stuck on last generation technology! Your modem is fine.

You have two options, buy a long Ethernet cable or

    Purchase a
pci express wireless card OR USB wireless card (pci suggested). Also ensure that it is 801.11 b/g/n or 901.11 b/g/n/ac.
