Exact name spoofing, how is done?

So I was playing a server today and this guy could set his name to exactly your name without any extra symbols or letters added. I'm curious how this is done. I assume it was done with a script because he was changing it rapidly. I know on most servers you can't set your name to same thing, otherwise you get a (1) or so. Anyone know how this is done?

I don't know about other people but I just add a zero-width space at the end of the name. It's completely invisible.

no length characters are a thing, also you can't set your name EXACTLY to someones or like you said, a (1) is added after ur name

Been over a week since last update/bump after answers, assuming solved.
