You want to practice in industrial areas before hitting the city's and just predict that every car is blind so just be always prepared to swerve stop or get out of the way, at traffic lights you want to be in the lane but in a position that you can quickly move out of the way from a car coming up behind you. Once you get over everyone trying to kill you we get to the fun part, riding with mates and hitting up the hills is just so good and a great way to clear the mind.
For a first bike i recommend something around 400-600cc with a comfortable riding position, i still have my first bike that's a gs500e and have a couple friends that got 250's and hated them after two weeks.
Just most important is to not be cheap with your riding gear! also loud pipes save lives.
P.S - Stay upright.
