I'm currently running a reference GTX980, but this is the most expensive mainstream consumer grade Graphics Card, excluding the Titan series. I guess this would depend on your current budget. If you are sitting on a large wad of cash, I would go for a non-reference GTX980 (Reference means the graphics card is produced by NVidia and not 3rd party retailers such as Asus, Gigabyte, etc.). If you're on a budget, you could snatch a fancy new GTX960 or GTX760. I had a GTX760 for a year or so and it did VERY well on almost every game I threw at it. I'm not including AMD in this because they're very hot and power consuming cards (fact not personal preference).

I would go for the 980 as those things have enough power to last awhile and are cool and quiet. You could if you want sheer power go with sli r9 290x(two r9 290x have the same cost as a 980 near me) but have the downside of high power consumption and noise.

I have a GTX980, and they aren't as fantastic as once thought to be. I've had some games where I couldn't play them because of how low my FPS was. Although they have a good reference design and out of this world features, they aren't all that powerful for me.

You could consider sticking with the AMD setup and going the route of a nice 290 and eventually CFing them. The heat and power requirements suck, but they're powerful cards and quite affordable.

After the whole 3.5GB's of useable memory fiasco, I'm kinda hesitant to recommend this card. But, Seeing as how my initial plan was to SLI it and I STILL haven't found it necessary to do so, I'd STILL recommend this card.
nVidia screwed up by not releasing FULL details of the memory architecture to their manufacturers/licensee's but I can forgive that ONCE..
