I just want to give you guys some reference sites.

The Game Creators is where i started off at, The Game Creators

It is a very good, helpful, active community, although they dont exactly tolerate the kind of stuff tolerated over here. So if you join just dont flame.
They have a 3d chat forum (modeling and texturing) but also have other products they sell forums.

i recommend this for beginners and/or casual once a week work on modeling.

Polycount is where the pros go.
This site is chock full of tutorials, WIPS, job requests, and career opportunities.
Polycount
make a thread on here and update frequently to get noticed and maybe get a job offer.

and here is a thread in TGC, invaluable to amateurs and pros alike

this has everything from free models, to tutorials, to the tools needed to make them.
