Ways to get respect.

Every day the MPGH forum welcomes new members. In an attempt to keep the forums a place of intelligent discussions and enjoyable conversations here is a guide to what separates the respected posters from those that are frowned upon.

Content- The first, and most important, topic I'd like to discuss is content of posts. Often times you will see people post things such as "Inb4thelock" or "Fail." These posts do not contribute to the thread. In fact, they make the thread less enjoyable for readers and only bring negativity. Another common thing you will see is one member quoting another and just adding "This" or "Win" after the quote. This is something that, again, adds nothing to the thread.

Only post if you have something worthwhile to contribute to the topic at hand and refrain from bashing other members in your posts. I'm not saying you should refrain from posting often, but when you do post be sure it is a well thought out and constructive one.

Respect- Too often a thread turns into a "flame war" between two or more members because one member does not respect another member's opinion. If someone posts something you disagree with, rather than putting down their idea, post a constructive response. If you are respectful in your reply, whether or not you agree, the other poster will most likely be respectful as well.

To gain respect on the forums, you must show respect on the forums.

Bashing a member, group or idea may seem like a fun idea in the short run, but if you continue to put people down it will reflect negatively on you. This is not a way to further yourself on the forums. Consider who you may be offending before you post. Do not be afraid to voice you own opinion as long as you do it in a respectful way. It is possible to be funny and remain respectful towards all members.

Technicalities (Punctuation, grammar and spelling)- Although it may not seem to make a difference, using correct punctuation, grammar and spelling will make your posts look more professional. As well as, attracting the attention of more readers who are glancing over the page.

You will find that most respected, long time members use correct punctuation, grammar and spelling in almost all of their posts. It's a small, easy thing to do that will improve they way people view your posts. Here is a list of just a few tips that can help make your posts more effective and more respected:

-Capitalize all letters(The beginning of a sentence,'I') that should be capitalized included the first letter of the post.

-Always end the post in some sort of punctuation (period, question mark, exclamation point, etc.)

-Don't hesitate to use the "Enter" key. Separating big walls of text will make the post easier to read.

-Profanity does not help get your point across.

-Refrain from using slang as much as possible.

-Use correct punctuation to keep your post from looking sloppy.

-Lots of smileys do not make your post look any better or more intelligent.

Starting Threads- Do not start a thread just for the sake of starting a thread. If you have a topic you would like to discuss that is already being discussed in a thread, just contribute to the current thread.



If you do have a worthy topic of starting a thread and it is not already being discussed, great!

Reputation- Rep is a good way to tell how respected someone is on the forums. The more rep a user has, the more others have agreed with that user's posts and ideas. A lot of members strive to get as much rep as possible, which is understandable. A few things to remember when thinking about rep are as follows:

-Do not beg users for rep. It will annoy them and they will be even less likely to give it to you.

-Earn your rep. Posting respectfully and intelligently will do this for you.

-Trading rep with other users just for the sake of gaining rep is not allowed. It is called 'Rep Boosting' and you can have all of your positive rep removed for doing it.

-Some users will rep you back for giving them positive rep. Don't expect it though and don't be disappointed if they don't.


Last Notes- Lastly, I'd just like to say the forums are a place created for enjoyment of the users. Have fun. Do not get discouraged if another user says something disrespectful to you because of your idea, join date, age or any other reason. Don't let it get to you and don't say something mean back.

How is it hard to understand?
Contribute = Contribute around the forum, help members, and be mature?
Know your place = Don't act like you run the forum, all members are equal to eachother (not including staff).
