I'm 17 and still on BMX
Well, My birthday is on the 12/2 (Febuary) and i'll be getting my learners license (I live in Australia)
It will be another year on the same day until I can receive my P's (Allowing you to drive by yourself without a person in the car who has a open license)
I've come to decide that I won't save up for a car for when I get my P's as I would rather purchase a car with turbo when I get to my open license as having the car I would like I could get legally for my P's but it would be no use for when I get my open license as I would have to pay to get a turbo installed in it...
(whilst you have you P's license you are not allowed high performance vehicles)
So just curious would it be a good Idea to use my families shit 4W4 until I can afford a car that I want and in three years I can probably guarentee myself getting a good car, Sitting on my ass at home doing simple jobs ect and selling things online I make around $400 a month Aprox that's around 4.8k per year... I know I will have to get my lazy ass a job to get more cash but I feel i don't need to show off my car in grade 12 like some other idiots I know of, buying there shit commodores with no turbos and putting some shitty black 29 inch rims on them,
Anyway...
I was considering purchasing a Nissan Skyline GTR R34 as I have a brother that use to own a skyline and a silvia and I pretty much fell in-love with it. I know most people say "You won't be able to handle it blah blah blah" But your incorrect, I'm not another kid from like the fucking city who dreams of all this good shit ect and expect my parents to buy it for me. I'm from some fucking shit rural farmer area and I hate it Living on 30 acres theres plenty of work and I know I can handle a car of this speed.
So should I save up for 3 years to get myself a good ride perhaps paying $40,000 + For my first car and whilst having to pay for insurence ect, I think this would be a good idea i don't plan to move out anytime in the future but join the army or go to ADFA (Austrailan Defence Force Academy)
Hopefully you guys can shed some light on how you guys paid for your first car
And no I'm not looking to pay $2000 for a pile of shit on wheels... I rather ride a bloody razer scooter then some shit like that and resale value will be as good as trading it in for a pile of goats hair.

I live in Australia.
Cars like MX5 and the S2000 are fun cars.
MX5 is fairly cheap.
S2000 is around 20~30K.
Both front-engined, rear wheel drive.
S2000 has VTEC which revs it to 9K RPM.
Only downside in my opinion is that it's a two seater and that it is fairly small.
Both legal for our age.
Also I'll be getting my license this August.
I reckon S15 or R34 GTR are fine as well, but you'd have to wait till full license.
I wouldn't want an NA Silvia.
I'm probably gonna get an MX5.

This.
I'm don't want to offend you in anyway since I was not born in Australia but Australian cars are the and I mean the shittest cars ever made period.
good choice on the skyline or silvia! I'd personally go for the silvia since that's and will always be my favourite car
though just like you said... we can't drive those sort of cars, yet we can drive Ferrari's and all that expensive shit? haha
I'm getting myself a VW Golf this year since
1. german cars are apparently the hardest cars to break into/ steal
2. It's safe and p plate approved
3. It's german ;D
also -.- get a job
goodluck!

I suggest you to get a used cheap car like a c220 2003 benz
My wife and I earn 6 figures, and we didn't pay 40k for both of our cars combined. 06 GTO & 06 Charger R/T
Guess you have things figured out better than we do.
My first car was a 91 Lebaron, got it for free, sold it for 1000.
I'm a huge car buff, love driving, modding, racing them. But remember you'll never recover 90% of every dollar you drop into a car.
40k would make a nice down payment for a house.
get a real job and save
use the car you have, as long as it runs its a fucking car right?

Buy a trash car as your first one, because you will most likely crash.
I got a Saab Viggen for about $3500 ('Murica) Has turbo, love it. I would wait and use the family's 4x4 until you can get a epic car like mine. There might not be a Viggen in AU but its worth looking around.
Ah yes, youngsters thinking that they need to have turbo charged cars as their first wheels. I too remember my early days of high school.
Trust me, you dont want that. Blowing all your money on a status car so you can roll around and say 'hur dur my autocar go fast' isnt exactly being very smart. Ive been driving a 97 Civic for about 6 years now, and guess what? All the kids in HS who bought Mustangs and Cameros are flat broke and selling drugs because they blew all their money on a car at the age of 16 and making enough money to actually pay for the car, and all the shit they are about to have to pay for (school, gas, food, bills) is too far out of their minimum wage pay range. That, or they wrecked the fucking things because teenagers + fast car = stupid. Talk all you want about how responsible you are blah blah blah. Buying a fast car is pointless unless you drive fast right? I thought so.
You're better off spending money on something cheap and reliable. As you become an adult you realize that there are moments when you need cash unexpectedly and it's going to suck if all your cash is tied up because of your car.
