House Defense - Burglary

So I live in a 3 story building with my 2 families of cousins (1 family per story). Last night around 10 PM some tall white guy tried to break into the first floor (room right below mine), simply by lifting the screen and trying to get in. My cousin (a guy, age 17) screams out "OH FUCK!" but his Buck 119 knife wasn't near him, but it was in his bag about 8 steps away, alerting the guy and he runs off. There was a thunderstorm last night, so the only visibility is from the lightning. My cousin (Age 20? Idk I think hes in his 1st or 2nd year of college) was in the room next and came rushing in. He's currently mad at my cousin (age 17) for not beating the shit out of the guy when he tries to get in since if the guy is climbing through the window, he's pretty vulnerable since there's a bed next to the window allowing very little free space. My 17 year old cousin argues that it doesn't matter. But my older cousin said "Well this is the 2nd time someone tried to break in since 4th grade", if you beat the shit out of a burglar, they probably ain't coming back.

So the question is, if a burglar breaks into your house, would it be better to scare them off or fight them and make an example of them? And as for now on, I guess imma sleep with my knife at arms distance.

You're in 'murica, go buy a 12 gauge, fill it with 3" magnum buckshot and use that for self defense, if anyone tries to cause your or your family harm, load them up with double ought buck.

Kick his teeth in. When I was younger someone tried to break into our house. A friend of my older brothers was staying the night and caught the guy, kicked his ass, slashed the guys tires, called the cops, and was given a commendation.

I personally wouldn't be able to do it with my bear hands but you could have held him off until your family gets in there. Or if your alone you could call the cops and get a knife so he wont come near you.
