As long as you have a permit, and it is used in self defence, i'm pretty sure you won't go to jail, depends on what country you're in of course.
Carrying a knife is illegal in most countries.
Also, IMO using a gun is more safe, both for you and the robber since you can simply put a cap in his/her knee and call the cops, compared to slashing around with a knife and possibly hitting a vital organ, cutting of a tendon or something along those lines.

The thing is to proof the cops that it was for self defence . Here ,in belgium , there are 2 things that are crap : the trains and the justice. Some time there's a robber who's getting cought while he's in a house , so the owner(s) beat him up (That would we all do i guess ) and then the robber can sue the owners for assault and battery ... Its so stupid here . Guns , knifes , bats, ... are all forbitten here

I don't know where you live( big city or countryside , idk) But you've seen those guys and they've seen you . And if they where by foot they can't live far from that place so it might that you see them again ...
