Google "site:mpgh.net *desired name*" If it's taken you'll most likely end up viewing a profile link.
Mention (@ + *name you wish to have*) the name in the middle of a post. Does not work if the first word, or if using visitor messages or private messages.

Mentions are the best way, just add @ before the name you want to check. Just make sure that you don't do it as the first thing in your post, as it will not register. For example "Name check @*insertnamehere*"

Actually, it can be done by doing @ @*insertnamehere* at least that's how I checked for names

Same concept, you're adding something else before the actual mention, thus it would work.
