Most likely a cry for attention or he is lonely or something like that. Chances of him actually wanting that are low. Just try to be his friend and make him feel like he has someone who cares about him.

I have met so many people that say they are suicidal for attention. And it pisses me off when they say something like that because they don't know the severity of that they are saying. So now when I see a "kid" say they are suicidal I just assume they are lonely and want attention from others because the majority of the time that is what is going on in my personal encounters with the matter at hand. Kids over react, and they say and do stupid things for attention from others.
