They work fine and really don't have any downsides.

If you're looking for the best anonymity, of course.
It's also pretty fast, I don't notice a difference when I use it.

DON'T USE free VPN. That is an accident waiting to happen. I personally use TOR when browsing around to do things I don't want anyone to find out about. Sure it is slower but it gets things done and way better then an vpn

I generally use SoftEther VPN for when I need to quickly connect a VPN for whatever reason, it is super fast, completely free, tons of connections to choose from and it's open-source. They do however keep logs for 3< months.
