I got myself one for $400 with 2.4 Ghz i7 Quad, 24GB DDR5 ram, 2GB DDR5 GeForce 7 something, and it has everything you'll ever need on it (ethernet, 5 usb ports, etc.).

Thought Alienware had a reputation of being overpriced, though they do look very nice.

They are overpriced, but that's why I'm telling you to buy one on Offerup. Personally, the computer I got was Lenovo.

MacBook isnt such a good idea. He will be using for school , right ? That means most of students will be using Windows for sure. Tons of things wont be compatible with his MacBook so I wouldnt recommend buying anything with MacOS

Macbook pro for college. Most college students use macs as far as i'm aware. Buy it from Apple and get @Copperhorse to refund it for you, tada money saved!

You need nothing special in a psychology major. I think you're looking for an i5 or maybe i7, 8 gb ram, anti-glare fullhd display, SSD storage and probably no dedicated card. Look for any lenovo / asus with the above specs. All these should be below your budget.
