It has always been on the decline
I've been talking with a lot of long term anime enthusiasts and it seems people think anime in recent years has been on the decline. What do you all think, and why? Personally I think the industry is doing fine ,but the quality / type of anime is going in a different direction than the past few years.
It has always been on the decline
Every year has practically been the same, only thing that has changed in the last 20 years is animation quality. Every season there will be seasons with shit shows and good shows, every season will have an anime to cater to the harem lovers or the tech nerds, that's how anime has been done since the 70's and will continue to do so, no major change will happen in how it's done in terms of variety and no major changes will happen in terms of decline in popularity.
As far as popularity goes anime has been on the rise in the western countries for some time now and still tops itself every year, Anime probably won't stop growing in western culture anytime soon and anyone who thinks is dying is blind to some pretty obvious shit right in front of them, take for example the growth of streaming platforms like Crunchyroll which has grown a substantial premium user base to stream anime to legally, not to mention conventions which funnily enough Crunchyroll is big enough to host it's own convention called Crunchyroll Expo which is actually going on THIS WEEKEND (right now). That doesn't even include Anime Expo which is the biggest NA convention that is still topping it's yearly attendance rate (100,000+ people in 2017).
The only thing that SHOULD change drastically soon is the pay in animation studios, it's a pretty well known fact that artist are paid pretty shit for the amazing stuff they do, some get paid so bad that a studio like Trigger(Kill La Kill, Little Witch Acadamia) actually considered and began working on making a fucking patreon..

Enjoy your life, you don't know how short it might be~
Ech maachen just dės Idioten :^)
anime is going good. just crate more sionen animes
Like Color said, everything has either been on the rise or have been relatively stable for the past two decades.
However, animators are definitely the issue here. The amazing shit they do is not shown in their paycheck.
Such as Attack on Titan. The second season only had twelve episodes compared to S1's 24 episodes.
This is due to the lack of animators to hire, because many of them have quit due to the low pay.
Anime is doing good so far pretty sure the popularity increased by AYYYLot
With everyday new and improving anime ideas and themes, anime is going no where near extinction. Theres no way it will ever be denied (Such as the goofy theme that they used to make movies with like the original Cinderella or original mickey mouse).
Wondering when that animator shortage bursts the anime industry bubble.
Anyways, I do like the mainstreaming of anime and anime mediums to modern times. I'd rather have alternatives to watching 100+ episodes of dragonball on the T.V and cringy ctrl +c, ctrl + v harems.
As i said, even if there are animator shortages, and anime is not being displayed as much, there will always be some amount of anime lovers, it will never die in japan (Because thats all they show on tv, hence the meaning Japanese cartoon). So it can never really die for good, for all we know it will start back being popular years after
A few good shows every season is all I need, but god damn there's a fair amount of shite coming out of Japan these days ;--;
