    Can't we just..?

    Could a technical person please explain to me in some level of detail why it isn't possible to intercept, decrypt, and modify maplestory packets? For example, upon being rewarded "30 Blue Potions" for a simple quest, isn't it possible to modify the identifier of the rewarded item to, let's say, "Maple Lama Staff". 30 Maple Lama Staffs would make my day.

    What is the mechanism Nexon uses to prevent packet editing? Are the packet encryption keys random? If so, isn't it possible to intercept the encryption function to disable it? And even apart from decryption and encryption, aren't there other client-side variables we can change to our advantage? What's the big idea? (in detail please; I am very interested in the technical details)

    No-one who plays maplestory is that advanced in packet editing.
    I don't think you will find an answer here.

    There is one guy YTMS, who doesn't share his secrets though.
    One of the most dangerous hackers in MapleGlobal.
    He can hack your account by just sending you a chat invitation.
    Who knows what he could possibly do.

    Solution

    Actually, I figured it out. MapleStory stores its own copy of each player's character. This is easy to determine, as even private servers have MySQL databases with all the player's information. The client just acts like an empty rock, echoing what the server tells it to do. Whenever you kill a monster, the server has the real copy of your character and adds EXP accordingly. Even if you modified the game memory and/or packet edited, you would only change the EXP on the client side, which the server doesn't care about. It's actually quite ingenious. I guess that's why we don't see any more "mesos" hacks or "EXP hacks".
