Not really, there's techniques to log it in almost any d3d9 game. And some techniques to even require you to log it, but simply hook the creation of the device in the beginning. Just search around. In a lot of codes the device pointer is found automatically. Gellins base is unique in that the device pointer has to be found manually.

Pointer isn't hard to get, as long as you can get an undetected debugger attached to CA.
Device pointer, not menu pointer.
