And it was where some dude was explain how the Island was like a bottle of wine or some shit.

The wine is the evil, and the cork of the win bottle represents the island. And the island is the only thing keep the evil from getting out.

Cork was only mentioned once in the whooooole series. So if im in a rush, and can't explain to dave what the island is. I should be able to quickly reply "cork" without my boss seeing. I think if you really wanna get the show just watch it, Its gone way beyond where it started. I've just watched previews for it over time and I'm just trying to figure out "Ok, they were on the island, they were lost. They got off the island, and there still lost? They go back to the island...ok, WTF?". So I'm not gonna do the dam research.

And there are 'bad' people who want to get to the light, but the protectors job is to protect it. Obviously.
If the bad people get to the light they could put it out, which would destroy the whole universe.
Hence the protector.
