Australia's Fires and its Affects
Australia is on fire. And the summer there has only just begun. 2019 was a year of record heat and record drought. Today the temperature outside Sydney was 48,9°C. 500 million animals are estimated dead because of the bushfires. Over 20 people have died and thousands of homes have burned to ground. The fires have spewed 2/3 of the nations national annual CO2 emissions, according to the Sydney Morning Herald. The smoke has covered glaciers in distant New Zealand making them warm and melt faster because of the albedo effect. And yet. All of this still has not resulted in any political action. Because we still fail to make the connection between the climate crisis and increased extreme weather events and nature disasters like the. That has to change, and it has to change now. Here are some photos so that you can grasp just a small percentage of what is happening.

My thoughts are with the people of Australia and those affected by these devastating fires, as well as with everyone on MPGH who have been affected at all by this terrible event. In particular, I would like to send my thoughts and love to @Silent and his family. I am deeply saddened the anyone has to go through this terrible situation, but we will make changes, and things will get alot better. As much as it is difficult, just continue to push through. Things will get better, and it will come quick.

We should all pitch in and give our love and support to all of the members being affected by this fire, including @Silent and his famiy, as well as donate to these organizations to help with disaster relief, environmental relief, and survivor relief. Thank you.


How to help evacuees

• Donate to the Australian Red Cross, which is supporting thousands of people in evacuation and recovery centers across the country. Local residents can volunteer their services.
  
• Donate to the Salvation Army Australia, which is providing meals and support to evacuees and first responders in multiple locations.
  
• Extra room in your home? Offer to host people in need of emergency housing on AirBnB.
  
• Donate to the St. Vincent de Paul Society, which is helping evacuated families recover. The organization is providing food and clothing, helping cover bills, and donating household items to those whose homes have been destroyed.
  
• Donate food, funds or services to Foodbank, the largest hunger-relief charity in Australia.
  
• Donate to a GoFundMe dedicated to displaced First Nations Communities that need to rebuild.
  
• Donate food, toiletries and household items using Givit.

How to help firefighters

• Donate to the New South Wales Rural Fire Service. The service has set up specific funds for the families of volunteer firefighters who have been killed while on duty this fire season.
  
• Additionally, actor and comedian Celeste Barber is also hosting a fundraiser for the Trustee for NSW Rural Fire Service and Brigades donations fund.
  
• Donate to Victoria's firefighting service, Country Fire Authority. The service is also managing locals who want to provide accommodation for people who have been displaced.
  
• The Country Fire Service in South Australia is taking direct donations.
  
• Donate to the Rural Fire Brigades Association to support firefighters in Queensland.

How to help wildlife

• Donate to WIRES, a wildlife rescue nonprofit that is rescuing and caring for thousands of sick, injured and orphaned native animals.
  
• Donate to the World Wildlife Fund Australia, which is directing its efforts towards koala conservation.
  
• Donate to the Port Macquarie Koala Hospital's GoFundMe, which has rescued and treated dozens of koalas suffering from severe burns. The hospital is using donations to install automatic drinking stations in burnt areas to help wildlife searching for water and to establish a wild koala breeding program to ensure the survival of the species.
  
• Donate to the RSPCA New South Wales, which is helping evacuate, rescue and treat pets and wildlife in threatened areas.

Great thread, always amazes me how much these things hide in the eyes of the world like the amazon one which most didn't hear about until something like 2 weeks in when some country had no sun for a full day due to smoke drifting.

I would be curious on whether or not a $1 donation actually benefits the charities, due to admin costs (not sure how strict regulators are there). Either way sent in some a bit ago, would be nice if PayPal didn't have such shitty rates

It truly is insane, and it actually does benefit them because the site admin system doesn't filter low donations. It's very sad to see things like that commonly occur as our CO2 rates increase. Here's a chart showing how BIG the Australian fires are compared to all the recent fires that have been happening all around the world. (Including the Amazon fires)
