What to do when you get bad smelling/tasting food at a restaurant?

This happened to me for the first time and I'm not sure how to react to this.

I ordered a dish (Chicken cashew) at a restaurant. I've never smelt or had this before in my life. However, when the dish came out, it didn't really smell good. Ended up not touching/eating that dish and shared a dish with my gf. My question is, how do you react in this sort of situation? Maybe the dish was suppose to smell/taste the way it did but I didn't like it? What do you do?

Do you tell the waiter it doesn't smell good and you want to order a different dish? Whats the appropriate thing to do. I usually don't go to restaurants that often, so I'm unsure.

If she thought it smelled bad too, probably the best thing to do is ask a waiter about the dish.

Just be honest and say that's not what you expected and it wasn't up to par. In the end, its up to the restaurant in deciding what they want to do. A lot of places let you pick something else and take it off the bill and other places don't.

You simple kindly say it to the waiter. If it wasn't supposed to be like that they will bring you a new one.

It really angers me when people are too afraid to say something. We didn't cook the food, we just bring it to you. If you complain about your food our first thought is "those fucks in the kitchen", not "those fucks at table 36". We'll gladly have the dish taken off your bill and offer you something else (and if you meet resistance then the place you're eating at is an absolute fucking shithole and never go back).
