Why it is possible to build external GPUs but not external CPUs??

There are plenty of external GPU systems available for PCs and Macs (made by Razer, BlackMagic, and so on).

Why is it not possible to have external CPUs?

I have a laptop given to me at work and it doesn't have enough CPU power and needs a bit more RAM, and I was wondering what is preventing an external CPU+Memory module be developed that one can plug in to a Thunderbolt port and reap its benefits?

Bandwidth issues, external GPUs are not good too...

It wouldn't work to be honest, even using thunderbolt ports you would notice a significant drop in performance. Bandwidth issues could be even worse than external GPUs.

big loss of performance, huge TDP... there are many factors why it's non-sense/not possible. You have to understand how and what for does the CPU work in 1st place. If you don't understand it it will be hard to understand why it's not been made yet.

Btw there were double-cpu mobos in the past but it's really without sense these days.

ok so even though your idea isnt half bad because you can simply just theoretically attach an external cpu and increase processing power however as per our current limitations of computer architecture and design the speed of an external cpu would be substantially less as mentioned above.
Think of it like this suppose your using google and instead of your average result for a google search multiply it by 5(5 too is theoretical number in reality it slows down much much much more).Similar issues would come here as it would bottle neck the internal hardware.

Here is a pyramid explaining how computer memory is ranked

Latency, purely and simple. The cpu and mobo need to be talking to each other as fast as possible.

Unless someone builds a motherboards that runs on a PCI-E you aren't going to get that, wait GPU match that description :O
