Actually when I joined almost a decade ago, I wanted to already access the marketplace to sell a game account (which ironically I got scammed).
That means it was already booming more than 10 years ago, or was already booming at that time.

If I recall there weren't many competition out there and MPGH had already dominated the search engines/market.
The Middleman team had also made the experience of trading go more smoothly if you accessed their services.
While I don't visit other sites, there were a lot of copycats out there, but they were at a severe disadvantage because the foundation of the marketplace was already built here with lots of daily trades, lots of visits, and trust. The more well known the site was, the more people would visit because of the brand & popularity.
You want to sell your products in somewhere that is known and can been seen to increase your chances of that product being sold.
That's why MPGH was/is the choice for people to sell their products.

When someone wanted to quit a game, it was natural that they sold their account, or in-game items to gain some compensation $$$ back.
Most of the trades initially were for game accounts & in-game items too, till it expanded to what it is today.
Eventually the marketplace became one of, if not the most popular section on this site.

can someone go resolve our issues in the account recovery section?

I tried waiting but it's almost 5 weeks now and no support, I can't get any password reset emails and locked out my account

I joined for combat arms hacking stuff, and then came back because marketplace right now is literally a gold mine

in 2019, early 2020 alone I think I got around 100k us dollars which is insane considering I'm only a college student

so that's why its big, its a gold mine, almost anything you buy from marketplace you can resell somewhere else for more

It's probably because all scamming Dutchies (except me) have been banned from MPGH, turning it into a safe place to trade.
