Okay, now, when you look at a person, do you look at their eyes or mouth first? If you're not socially awkward, you look at their eyes first, of course. It is how you let someone know you're listening to what they're saying.

Therefore, when typing smilies, in order to make them easily readable to the masses, it would make an astonishing amount of sense to make the smiley left to right. In addition to that, as stated above, eyes first, mouth second. Rendering the smiley as such ': )', rendering this smiley '(:' as half backwards.
