Thumbs up Make and Upload HD videos for youtube. For Dummies.

Here's the tutorial to make and upload HD videos in 720p quality. Enjoy.

Skip to step 3 if you already got the video done.

The programs you're going to be using are:
    Fraps
    Virtual Dub
    MPEG Streamclip
and quicktime but I think you'd already have quicktime.

All those programs are free and will be attached.

If you don't trust my attachments, feel free to google them and get them from the official site, or another reliable link.

    STEP1 Record.
You can use any screen recording program you can find, but in this tutorial I'm going to use fraps. When you download fraps it's only the trial version and you can only record 30seconds at one time, but don't worry the full version of fraps is attached to this thread.

After installing fraps you can make some changes to your own preference.

    Where you save the videos.
Click the "Movies" tab will bring out the settings of capturing of the videos.
Click Change to bring out the Folder Explorer.
Here you can change where the videos you capture will be stored. (Note: The videos will be huge so it's recommended that you have alot of space where the videos will be stored.)

    Changing the FPS
The fps options changes the fps of the video that's going to be recorded, the higher the better, but the higher the fps is, the larger the file is going to be. I don't really see any different from 60-100, but I keep mine at 100 just because I got enough disk space to waste.

    STEP2 Making the video.
This step is pretty easy, and you basically edit your video and add whatever effect you want. I recommend sony vegas as your video editing tool, but just any video editor will work as long as you can save it as an avi file. (Although saving as an uncompressed avi file will bring you better results)

Before you want to save your video that you're done editing with ,make sure the video isn't too long or you wont be able to upload the video later on. With all the setting in this tut a 5minute video should be around 1gb.

    STEP3 Saving your video.
Ok, now that you've done with the editing, time to upload? Nope, not yet, you gotta format the video into the settings of youtube hd's settings.

First you want to save your video in Sony Vegas. Press save as, and in the drop down menu select "uncompressed avi". (Note that you have to save as an avi file, and with uncompressed avi you're going to get the best result. Also note that the file you save will be huge, so again be sure to have alot of disk space.

    STEP3 Resizing your video.
Now you got to resize your video in order for it to be played with the youtube hd player. First open up the video you just saved in sony vegas in Virtual Dub. (Make sure that the video file you put in Virtual Dub is an avi file, it doesn't have to be uncompressed avi.) Then press Videos->Filters->Add->Resize.

    Now you got three options:
The main goal you want to achieve here is to make your video 1280 by 720.

    Options 1:
This is the easiest way, but it will make your video out of proportion. All you do is disable aspect ratio then change the "absolute pixels" to 1280 x 720. This will stretch or shrink the video to make it 1280 x 720.

    Options 2:
is that you can add black bars to the side or the top and bottom of the video. This will fill in the missing space making the video big enough. To do this, change the value so that one "absolute pixels" 's value is the 720 or 1280 while the other one is lower than 720 or 1280.
If your height is higher than 720, and your width is lower than 1280.
---------> Change your height to 720.
If your height is lower than 720 and your width is higher than 1280.
---------> Change your width to to 1280.
If your height AND width are lower than 720/1280.
---------> Change whichever is the higher value to 1280.
If your height AND width are higher than 720/1280.
--------->Change both values until the smaller value is smaller than 720 and the bigger value is small than 1280.

Then check "Letterbox/chop to size" and change the values to 1280 x 720

    Options 3:
This will chop off the values that are over sized. Simply Check "Letterbox/chop to size" and change the values to 1280 x 720. (Note that you can resize the video first by changing the "absolute pixels" 's value before chopping the video.)

Now that you're done with resizing. Click ok then ok again, then go to files->Save as avi.

    STEP4 Formatting your video..
Open your newly saved avi file in MPEG Streamclip. Now click File->Export to QuickTime.
For the "Compression" click the drop down tab and select H.264.
Change the quality to around 85. This does not make much different from 70-100, but go ahead and chose which ever one you feel is the best quality for you.
For sound, click the drop down tab and select MPEG-4 AAC.
Youtube HD requires a fps rate of 24 or higher, so if your video's fps rate (not the fps on crossfire but the fps of the avi file you got from virtual dub) is not 24 or higher, put in a value that's higher than 24, to keep the file size small, just put in 25-30 because I can honestly not see a different in the fps.

After your done that just click "Make Movie" and wait for it to finish.
After it's done, now you got a decent size video file that still keeps the amazing quality, and is playable with the youtube hd player.

    LAST STEP: Uploading your video.

I dont think i need to explain this much, just log on to your youtube account and upload like you normally would. And after it's done processing, there should be an option for you to view the video in 720HD.

Also here's a video of mine that was done the exact way I just said in this tutorial. You can expect your video to come out with the same quality, if not better.

If you find this tutorial helpful in anyway, please press the thanks button, and if you have any questions, feel free to ask below.

This tutorial is written entirely by me, Capsuie.
