Making a cartoon!

So I have to do a project in school where you have to make a short video ~3-4 minutes. I'm thinking about making a cartoon. I've done some research, but I'm here to ask for other people's opinions. What programs would you use (free?) to make a short animation (with flash of course). I'm thinking about using photoshop to make the pictures, and creating everything else with another software. I'm a beginner, and know very little about animations. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well, a good legitimately free program is pivot. It's not the best, but it requires almost no learning at all and works well for quick animation. Animate pro is like pivot on steroids, but it's really complicated to learn. If you ever get serious I would take a look at that, but you should stay with Flash or pivot for a simple school project.

Use pivot and make the backgrounds with other programs

use macromedia flash

There (I guess)is an education version, but not sure about that...

Ok anime animations are mainly my teritory.
first what kind of animation do you want:
Frame by Frame,
Flash created animation,
or 3d animation with a 2d converting material.

Personally i do frame by frame though it takes some hours to create one,
since i see what u try to do is create images in PS and import those into Flash.

I dissagree on doing this, cauze FLASH doesnt know boundries when you scroll, for this u should use FireWork or Flash to create the outlines/drawings. After you created some frames import/alter these in Flash and finally u can import images into PS to refine and make things abit more "WOW!" like.

so the tools i recommend are:
Adobe PS (CS3/CS5)
Adobe Fireworks
Adobe Flash

(for these u can all get the portable editions wich work fine)
Adobe PS CS5 portable (is named: "White Rabbit").
