GB hack still work?

hi, I tried the GB hack and it didn't give me 7000 GB(after a round).
I followed the steps from the tut.
I also tried to directly change the GB and i found out that it just shows the change, but it doesn't actually change it.
I dont get this? lol, im not even close to being a hacker, but id really like to learn. I tried getting the starter kit, but i had a Virus. Theres a whole lot for me to understand, but could i get a few answers.
does the value matter of what you put in? or does it have to be the value from the tut?, which i think was 1399999.
Why doesn't it work if you change the value of GB?
I hope you find the time to answer my answers. I'll have a really long path to walk before i become a hacker, but i would really like to know some simple rules of hacking.
